It’s amazing that any bird can fly, but the toucan is really surprising. How does this bird lift off with that huge beak? Well, even though the beak can be 9 inches long and make up 1/2 the bird’s entire surface area, it doesn’t weigh much. It’s made out of keratin, the same stuff in your fingernails and hair. This big beak is perfect for plucking fruit. Since toucans weigh just 2 pounds at most, they don’t need to eat much. And with that giant beak, we bet they can peel an orange faster than you!
