Mother’s Day Around the World

Mother’s Day is a holiday all around the world, but not on the same date. The United States celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries celebrate on other Sundays, but in Mexico it’s always on May 10th. Ethiopia probably wins: their Mother’s Day is a festival that lasts for three days. Wherever and whenever you happen to be, it’s a good time to celebrate mom!

Wee ones: Do you think your mom has celebrated more or fewer Mother’s Days than you? Why?

Little kids: If you celebrate for 3 straight days starting on Sunday, are you still celebrating on Thursday? Bonus: There are 52 Sundays in 2024. How many Sundays are not Mother’s Day?

Big kids: If you celebrate for the rest of May starting on the 12th, will you celebrate for at least half the 31 days of the month? Bonus: What is the latest date on which the 2nd Sunday of May (or any month) can land?

Answers:

Wee ones: More, because your mom is older than you, and Mother’s Day only comes once per year!

Little kids: No, your celebration ends with Tuesday. Bonus: 51 Sundays.

Big kids: Yes, there are 20 days left in May if you include the 12th, which makes more than half of 31! Bonus: The 14th. If the 1st day of the month is a Monday, the first Sunday will be the 7th, and another week makes the 14th.
