‘Vehicles and Transportation’
A bicycle gives you a smart, easy way to go places. It weighs a lot less than a car — can you imagine carrying an SUV on your shoulder? But a bike is still pretty heavy and crazy-shaped to pick up with your hands. So a team of guys built a bike that can fold up really, really small and fit in your backpack.
When a building isn’t the right size for what we need, we have some choices. We can add onto it, we can knock it down and build a new one, or we can just move to another building. Or you can just move the whole building, as one company did back in 1930. You can bet that required a lot of planning and math!
You might not remember being pushed around in a stroller when you were 1 year old. But even so, you’re probably pretty sure the stroller didn’t have a gas-fueled engine driving it at the speed of a car. That didn’t stop one record-breaking dad from building the world’s fastest baby carriage.
When you buy a banana, zucchini or tomato at the grocery store, it just pops from the shelf into your shopping bag. But that fruit or veggie may have already traveled thousands of miles to reach you! Two people from National Geographic decided to track the journey of a box of strawberries. It might shock you to find out how well-traveled your fruits are.
Riding a rocket must be incredibly exciting. But it must be even better to zoom on a rocket up to the International Space Station and stay there. Sailing 268 feet above our heads, the ISS celebrates its 15th birthday today. So if you look up in the sky tonight and see it floating by, make sure to give it a “Happy birthday” shout out!
Comets are one of the most exciting types of space objects: a chunk of rock and ice speeding through space and leaving a long, bright tail of ice and dust behind it. What’s even more exciting is landing a spacecraft on a comet traveling 135,000 miles per hour, which happened this week!
Basketball isn’t just about chucking the ball so it lands in the net. There’s a lot of excitement in how you throw the ball, and how far. And this was certainly true when Drake University student Alex Tillinghast had the chance to win a truck by making 4 different shots in 30 seconds. Did he make it? Read on to find out and do the math!
The game Jenga is a test of steady hands. You stack blocks 3 across in 9 layers, then each player has to pull out a block and set it on top of the tower without making the whole stack tip over. People love this game. But why should we have all the fun? From cats to construction vehicles – everybody and everything is joining in on the game!
When a big new warship is built for our Navy, it’s built on land, of course – but then it somehow has to get to the water. There are a few ways to do it, but the most fun way to launch a ship has to be tipping it off a ramp and letting it plop into the water like a bath toy. We bet the waves the ship creates are a bit bigger, though.
For a long time the U.S. Post Office delivered only thin letters. So when they first started delivering packages in 1913, people got excited and started mailing all sorts of surprising things.
